Life in a Bookless Library
Life in a Bookless Library: A Discussion on the Future of Libraries | Kelly Thormodson
Summer 2016, saw the complete transformation of the Health Sciences Library at the University of North Dakota as we transitioned to a new School of Medicine and Health Sciences building. The library is now 99% bookless. There are no stacks and really no library. All that remains is an information desk and some work space and offices. The education librarians are embedded elsewhere in the building. Our ILL is up 10%. We didn’t have money to replace any paper that was discarded with e-versions of books or journals. Our whole idea of reserves and reference has changed. Everyone has an opinion of the new library from “I hate it” to “That’s cool.” It has been a year of major change and one that we have successfully met. This session will be a summary presentation of the health sciences library’s current situation as a lead into to a discussion on the futures of libraries.

Open Educational Resources aT UND
Open Educational Resources at the University of North Dakota | Holly Gabriel, Megan Carroll, and Zeineb Yousif
As the cost of course textbooks increases dramatically, the use of open textbooks and materials becomes more of a concern to increase student success and retention. By collaborating with multiple stakeholders, the University of North Dakota has been successful in helping faculty adopt open educational resources (OERs). We will share the Chester Fritz Library’s involvement in bringing open education resources to our campus.

Poster Room 3: Enhanced Bibliographic Access and Scalar: A Case Study
Enhanced Bibliographic Access and Scalar: A Case Study | Devon Olson
This poster presents the creation of enhanced finding aids and resource guides using the open-source web publishing platform, Scalar. It presents the Scalar site created in collaboration with colleagues in 2016 for the Special Collections Department of the Seattle Public Library. Scalar is an open-source semantic web authoring tool created by the University of Southern California that allows authors to create websites with structures directly reflecting the relational nature of narratives and resources. In particular, the platform’s ability to generate data visualizations, which double as navigational widgets, allows patrons to engage with resources in a completely different manner from traditional library sites and records. The platform’s ease-of-use, scalability, and engaging interface make it a particularly exciting tool for librarians.
